John and Kathe McKenna open their apartment to men on the streets of the South End

Haley House Becomes a Home

Building at 23 Dartmouth Street is purchased and named after Leo Haley. The Live-In Community is formally created to host committed volunteers interested in living in an intentional community

1968
Becoming a 501(c)(3)

Haley House becomes an official nonprofit

Meals for isolated, elderly neighbors are introduced

Affordable Housing

First building dedicated to permanent housing is purchased on Tremont Street

More Housing Units Acquired

Columbus Avenue lodging houses are developed

Organic Agriculture

Noonday Farm is purchased and used to grow organic produce until being transferred to a land trust in 2012

Beginning of Social Enterprise

Bakery Training Program initiated in Soup Kitchen

Food Pantry

Food Pantry offers fresh produce and dried goods to neighbors in need

Interfaith Housing developed in partnership with Madison Park Development Corporation

Haley House Bakery Café opens in Dudley Square

Take Back the Kitchen and Art is Life Itself! introduced at the Café

Transitional Employment Program starts at the Café

Ground-breaking at Urban Garden Collaborative with McKinley South End Academy (adjacent to Soup Kitchen)

After 43 years at the helm, Kathe McKenna steps aside; Bing Broderick becomes our second Executive Director.

First planting season at Thornton Urban Farm in Roxbury, in partnership with Hawthorne Youth & Community Center

Outdoor Dining Opens at Soup Kitchen

Soup Kitchen expands capacity by opening a new outdoor dining area for the summer, allowing us to safely serve more meals than ever
