Take Back the Kitchen

Overview

Take Back the Kitchen (TBK) is a cooking and nutrition program that promotes the joy and health benefits of cooking food from scratch. Our curriculum emphasizes using whole foods, trying new things, and understanding the personal, environmental, and social impacts of how we eat. Whenever possible, we use produce from Haley House’s own farm.

Our approach is hands-on. Classes are taught by passionate and experienced chef-educators. During each class, students learn basic cooking techniques, nutrition essentials, kitchen safety, and knife skills. Simultaneously, students prepare a meal to be shared at the end of the class, while reflecting on their experiences that day.

How it works

Our classes provide students with life skills and food information that will help them navigate the increasingly complex and confusing world of food, nutrition, and health. They also examine how their food choices affect the health of their bodies, their communities, and the environment.

We typically work with mission-aligned community organizations who serve youth (ages 10+), families, and seniors. We have a library of class curricula that tailors the classes towards the needs of the various populations we serve.
