Summer Residency

Overview

The summer residency is a three-month commitment and an opportunity to be integrated into the regular work of Haley House, building deep connections with our guests in the soup kitchen, and participating in the life of the Live-In Community. Room and board are provided in exchange for service, and we have some funding available to provide stipends for 1-2 summer residents.

Core Responsibilities

The core responsibilities for summer residents include engaging guests of the soup kitchen and preparing soup kitchen meals. Summer residents will be expected to work 3-4 meal shifts each week (12-16 hours total). After a few weeks, summer residents will also be expected to co-manage meal coordination, including planning the menu and leading a group of volunteers in the preparation and serving of the meal. Other tasks related to the soup kitchen will require approximately 2-4 additional hours per week (food pick ups, recycling, cleaning, etc.). In total, summer residents work 20-25 hours a week and participate in a once weekly community dinner (meal prepared and enjoyed together with the Live-In Community). Many folks also work part time in the neighborhood to earn extra money in addition to the room and board provided by Haley House, and we have funding available for 1-2 summer residents for whom finances may be an issue.

Our Living Space

Our living space is located in Haley House’s 5-story brick row-house in the historic South End, above our soup kitchen and administrative offices. Summer residents will share rooms (2-3 people per room) and accommodations are modest. Food is shared in a common kitchen on the top floor. As members of the community, summer residents are expected to participate in house chores and weekly community dinners. Presence and participation in community living are important components of this program. The summer residency requires flexibility and is subject to adjustments based on Haley House’s needs, but in general, summer residents should be ready to step up to support and run the soup kitchen, while remaining open to other opportunities at the organization, including but not limited to event support, farm/garden work, administration support, and more.
