For the last nine years, the Haley House has operated a successful bakery training program out of our soup kitchen facility in Boston’s South End. After graduating, 85% went on to full or part-time jobs.

Job Training Program

Introduction to training: A two–week, unpaid evaluation period gives trainees the chance to experience work in a bakery and demonstrate motivation and ability to meet the program demands.

Month One: Trainees learn kitchen procedures: knife skills, organizing a workspace, prepping ingredients, sanitation procedures. Trainees also start to learn baking skills: scooping muffins; weighing cookies, pizza and bread dough; shaping cookies and bread; and assembling tarts and pies. Trainees also learn to package and label products for sale.

Month Two: Trainees learn mixing and sheeting. Trainees also begin baking. Near the end of the month, trainees determine focus products to learn from start to finish.

Month Three: Trainees demonstrate mastery of focus products and increase independence in other products.

Months Four and Five: Trainees complete a one to two month rotation in the Café to learn how to prepare soups, salads and sandwiches, and train in customer relations, cashiering, product display, stocking, and cleaning, and caring for the cafe.

Month Six: Trainees complete mastery of product line and teamwork skills. With the support of the Training Coordinator, trainees carry out job search activities.

Employment: Bakers trained at the Bakery at Haley House are now working at the Copley Plaza Hotel, the Double Tree Hotel, ‘Za Pizza, and many other local bakeries and restaurants.

Applicants should be able to read English and understand simple math.
